Uniden Bearcat BC590XLT scanner

Post by Eskimo_Pie »

Anyone have info on this scanner? I might be buying it from a buddy of mine if the price is right. It's a 100 ch scanner, it's pre-800mhz, and some preset freq. I'm mostly concerned with how wide it is. It looks similar to a radio shack pro 2026. Looking to install it in a dash of my explorer in the ashtray hole. I've done the google thing and uniden's site doesn't have info on their older scanners on the site. Anyone have one of these? I live in an area that uses hardly any (gasp :?: ) 800 trunking systems. Mostly VHF and a few UHF freq. Can't even find a PDf of the manual.

Thanks for any tips!!

I would think it would be a good scanner. I have a few Radioshack and Uniden scanners of that age and they are great for non-800mhz scanners. Clean receive and loud audio. With a good mobile antenna, you should do fine with it mounted in your car.

As for dimensions, I couldn't find anything on the Uniden, but I did look up its Radioshack counterpart that you listed and it has dimensions of 6.3(W) x 1.6(H) x 7.4(D) in.

Thanks for the info.

I have a Uni/B-cat 560xlt that I pulled out of storage recently, sounds great, receives well, but it only has 16 channels and the small back-of-unit antenna is only good for local stuff. Since I've had good luck building a 11 meter dipole, I might try the same no-cost antenna build approach for the 560. Back in my days with civil defense, I used to run with 1 hand held RS Pro-34 scanner and the Pro-2026 with an antenna specialist fender mounted MON53 scanner antenna. I wish AS still made those antennas. It was about 4 foot with a loaded coil in the middle, strong, and survived many "transplants" to my other cars over the years and pulled in everything, 25mhz to 800/900 mhz.

Hi Greg; I picked a bc-590xlt up years ago for the wifes uncle & he ran it for years with good results . The only downside we found was the squelch button run on the back side of the on/off volume switch . This was a bitt trickey for him to get on to , as he would often move the squelch at the same time . He did eventulay master it ? Several times i had to replace the display bulbs but it is a simple job . Personaly i thought it was a grate little radio & would recomend it if not spending a lot $$$ as it is anilog . All the best,,,,,,,,,,, Bob. lucky 13.
